Junior Performance Squad
Our fastest junior swimmers, usually aged 9-12, are invited to join our Junior Performance Squad by coaches recommendation.
We expect our Junior Performance Squad members to train at least 3 times a week and commit fully to the competition aspect of swimming. Junior Performance Squad members must show good motivation and a love of the sport!
It is generally expected that Junior Squad swimmers will compete in Junior Galas, Club Championships, and our Tony Holmes Open Meet. They can expect to be racing regularly for Leander at League galas, including the Arena League and the higher level County Championships on qualification.
To be retained within the Junior Squad the expectation is that swimmers age 11 are County Championship qualifiers, with younger swimmers on this squad making regular progress towards that goal.
Between 12-13 years, swimmers can expect to move to the Senior Performance Squad if they meet the criteria. This move is over a transition period, enabling swimmers bodies to adapt to more intensive sessions. We see this as vital to ensure the move is the right one for the swimmer, and also to prevent injuries that are common in other squad structures due to over-training.
Swimmers that do not meet the criteria for Senior Performance, may move to our Senior Squad. This squad enable senior swimmers to continue to build their training, with fewer demands on their time both for training and competition. Many of these swimmers are also competing at County level.
